About the Editors

Shepard R. Hurwitz, MD is a professor of orthopedic surgery in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of North Carolina Health System, Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Dr. Hurwitz has been involved with medical student and resident education, basic and clinical research, patient care, and medical center administration for nearly 30 years. He has practiced orthopedic foot and ankle surgery since completing a year of postdoctoral fellowship, in private practice, in government service (US Army and Veterans Administration) and in 4 different residency teaching programs. He has several teaching and service awards from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Diabetes Association, the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, the University of Virginia, George Washington University, and National Institutes of Health. Author or coauthor of more than 80 manuscripts, 14 book chapters, and editor of 4 texts on foot and ankle surgery, his main area of clinical interest is in outcomes following surgery of the ankle and hindfoot.   

Selene G. Parekh, MD, MBA 
is an associate professor of orthopedic surgery at the North Carolina Orthopaedic Clinic and Duke University, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. His research and clinical interests include total ankle replacements, foot and ankle injuries of athletes, minimally invasive foot and ankle trauma surgery, tendon injuries of the foot and ankle, and the adoption and development of novel technologies in foot and ankle surgery. He has been an active speaker at regional, national, and international meetings, helping to teach other orthopedic surgeons about novel techniques for the care of foot and ankle patients.
