Product Description

Clinical Management Notes and Case Histories in Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy is a succinct guide that facilitates a case-based learning approach to cardiopulmonary care. This one-of-a-kind text combines evidence-based assessment and management skills and well-thought-out cases of typical presentations of pulmonary and cardiovascular conditions. This combined approach helps students and clinicians learn meaningful skills in a clinically relevant manner.

Two primary components present in Clinical Management Notes and Case Histories in Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy are notes on cardiopulmonary assessment and management, and case histories involving respiratory and cardiovascular conditions commonly viewed by physical therapists. Accompanying the notes are thought-provoking questions and problems that enable the reader to establish a foundation of core concepts. The presentation of case histories further facilitates the development of integral skills and enables the reader to integrate those core concepts into a clinical setting. Also, question and answer guides accompany the patient profiles.

A Few of the Cardiopulmonary Assessment Topics:

  • Physical Examinations
  • Chest Radiology
  • Pulmonary Function Testing
  • EKG Interpretation

A Few of the Cardiopulmonary Management Topics:

  • Clinical Decision Making and Setting Treatment Goals
  • Mobilization and Exercise Training
  • Breathing Exercises
  • Medical and Surgical Interventions

Case Histories Include:

  • Brief history
  • Description of physical presentation
  • Arterial blood values, chest x-rays, EKG results and/or pulmonary function report

The two-fold evidence and case based learning approach used by authors W. Darlene Reid, BMR(PT), PhD and Frank Chung, BSc(PT), MSc allows for a more engaging experience. Students are able to learn and develop skills to prepare them for their professional transition while clinicians can use the text as a reference tool.

Reviews

"As a seasoned clinician, I found the case studies to be challenging to my therapy skills, and a great way to apply my clinical knowledge."

— Mary Casey, MS, PT, Advance for Physical Therapists and PT Assistants

"Overall, this is a very interesting text loaded with valuable, well-referenced information. This book has something to offer both the new and experienced clinician, as well as the student and the teacher. Students and instructors should find the case histories and evidenced based format particularly useful."

— John P Sanko, PT, EdD, Physical Therapy

About the Authors

W. Darlene Reid, BMR(PT), PhD

W. Darlene Reid, BMR(PT), PhD, is an associate professor at the School of Rehabilitation Sciences, University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She earned her physical therapy degree from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1979. She completed graduate studies in Pathology at the University of British Columbia and obtained her PhD in 1988.

Darlene teaches graduate and entry-level physiotherapy respiratory care and muscle injury, and supervises research by graduate and undergraduate students in the School of Rehabilitation Sciences, the School of Human Kinetics, and the Experimental Medicine programs at the University of British Columbia. Undergraduate courses include those related to exercise physiology and physiotherapy management of patients with cardiopulmonary conditions. Graduate teaching is related to exercise physiology, exertion-induced muscle injury, and advanced techniques in the management of cardiovascular and respiratory patients. In addition, Darlene is involved in continuing education related to these areas.

Darlene has held scholarship salary awards from the B.C. Health Research Foundation and the Killam Foundation. Her areas of research interests include respiratory muscle injury and pulmonary rehabilitation. Clinically, she has specialized in physiotherapeutic treatment for patients with acute and chronic pulmonary disease. Her clinical research has focused on therapeutic interventions directed toward the ventilatory muscles including ventilatory muscle testing, training, and rest in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Her most recent endeavours have been directed toward understanding different mechanisms that may contribute to diaphragm injury in animal models and evidence of diaphragm injury in humans.

Darlene has extensively published, including peer reviewed manuscripts, abstracts, review papers, and chapters. She has been a symposium speaker at a number of international conferences, including the American Thoracic Society, the combined Canadian Physiotherapy Association/American Physical Therapy Association, and the American Physical Therapy Association Combined Sections Meetings.

Darlene is a member of the Cardiorespiratory Specialization and Standards Committee and the British Columbia Lung Association Medical Advisory Board. She has served on several national and local committees related to cardiorespiratory physiotherapy as Cardiorespiratory Division Executive of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association, as Executive of the Canadian Physiotherapy Cardiorespiratory Society of Lung Association, and as the provincial coordinator of the Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy Summit. She also has served and continues to be a reviewer of manuscripts and grants for several agencies.
