About the Author
Theresa Meyer, BS, PT
Theresa Meyer, BS, PT received her physical therapy degree from Thomas Jefferson College of Allied Health in 1986. She also received a BA degree in health and physical education from Messiah College in 1984.
Theresa started her career as a traveling physical therapists for Pro Therapy of America. This experience allowed her to gain valuable insight into a wide variety of health care settings, including home health, long-term care, outpatient facilities, as well as acute and rehabilitation hospitals. This also provided exposure to many health care systems throughout the United States.
She attended the World Physical Therapy Conference in Sydney, Australia in 1986 to further her education of physical therapy and research internationally. At this time, she wrote the most widely used physical therapy review book for the bard licensure examination. This project was born out of a desire to assist with the stress and time constraints that physical therapy students undergo in preparation for the national board licensure examination. Theresa Meyer’s Review Book for the Physical Therapy Licensing Exam, was the first book on the market to assist the student in exam preparation. She also wrote the Review Book for the Physical Therapist Assistant, which offered a multipurpose approach to assist physical therapist assistant students in studying for the board exam and comprehensive finals. Both books are best-sellers and have been used as textbooks in the United States and internationally. The books evolved through many updates and revisions to become two-volume sets with the addition of a software program to simulate computer examination testing in the current examination format.
In 1987, Theresa Meyer founded, and is the owner of, Midwest Hi-Tech Publishers. In 1988, Pro Therapy promoted her to Director of Rehabilitation at Three Rivers Area Hospital in Michigan. She developed cardiac rehabilitation, sports medicine, and fitness programs for the hospital while managing both inpatient and outpatient programs. She also served as their Regional Director for Southwest Michigan. She intertwined her responsibilities at the hospital with a consultant position to additional hospitals and outpatient facilities in the areas of new program development, clinic management, personnel hiring, staff education and preparation for JCAHO and Medicare reviews.
At this time, Theresa was attending many American Physical Therapy conventions to accelerate her learning in physical therapy. Her next career step was cofounding Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine Centers, a private practice that grew from one clinic in 1990 to 10 clinics. The private practices provided Michigan communities with state-of-the-art facilities and highly trained staff. She wrote a Guide to Evaluation with Forms for the Physical Therapist to provide physical therapists a succinct and easy method to perform comprehensive examinations of patients. She also worked as an educator for Pro Exam Source, teaching review workshops for the licensing examination to physical therapists and physical therapists assistants.
She sold her private practices to a national corporation in 1997 and retired. In 1998, she was a cofounder in Outpatient Certification Consultants. She and her partner wrote a new manual for Medicare certification, Outpatient Policy and Procedure Manual, to assist clinics in preparing for Medicare certification and meeting health care guidelines. Currently, she resides in Michigan and is working as a consultant and author.
