About the Authors

Howard V. Gimbel, MD, MPH, FRCSC, FACS, Diplomate ABO, AOE, CABES

Howard V. Gimbel, MD, MPH, FRCSC, FACS, Diplomate ABO, AOE, CABES, is the Founder, Medical Director, and Senior Surgeon of the Gimbel Eye Centre in Calgary, Canada. Dr. Gimbel received his doctorate in medicine and a master’s in public health from Loma Linda University in California. He completed his internship and ophthalmology residency at the White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles. In 1964, Dr. Gimbel began practicing as an eye specialist in Calgary. Dr. Gimbel has academic appointments at the University of Calgary, University of California-San Francisco, and is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Loma Linda University.

Gimbel Eye Centre-Calgary was the first center in Canada to perform excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (1990). Since that time, Gimbel Eye Centre surgeons have performed over 60,000 laser vision correction procedures. Dr. Gimbel has personally performed over 75,000 vision correction procedures.

Ellen E. Anderson Penno, MD, MS, Diplomate ABO, FRCSC

Ellen E. Anderson Penno, MD, MS, Diplomate ABO, FRCSC, in addition to performing refractive and cataract surgeries at the Gimbel Eye Centre in Calgary, Canada, has opened Eye MD Calgary where she sees general ophthalmology patients. Dr. Anderson Penno has been involved in research since her undergraduate training. She graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1992 with a combined medical degree and master’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science. Her interest in research continued throughout her residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and her refractive surgery/research fellowship at the Gimbel Eye Centre in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1997 to 1998.

Dr. Anderson Penno has coauthored numerous publications and book chapters relative to refractive surgery including Refractive Surgery: A Manual of Principles and Practice.
