About the Editors
Ellen J. Scherl, MD, FACP, AGAF, is the Jill Roberts Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine and Director of The Roberts Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease at Weill Medical College of Cornell University/ New York-Presbyterian Hospital. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in English from Barnard College, Columbia University, and a medical degree from New York Medical College. She is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), a member of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and a past president of the New York Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (NYSGE). She is currently Vice President of the New York Academy of Gastroenterology.
Dr. Scherl is Chairperson of the New York Chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America and is involved in the New York Crohn’s Foundation. She received the 2008 AGA Outstanding Women in Science award, 2006 NYSGE Florence Lefcourt Distinguished Service Award, and has been awarded by the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. She is an American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Circle of Life Member and a member of the AGA Legacy Society. She is board certified in medicine and gastroenterology.
Dr. Scherl is an editorial reviewer for IBD Journal, Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Digestive Diseases and Sciences, and Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. She is coauthor of the chapter “Crohn’s Disease of the Small Intestine” in Gastroenterology and Hepatology: The Comprehensive Visual Reference, associate editor of Inflammatory Bowel Disease: The Complete Guide to Medical Management, and coauthor of An Interactive Dialogue on IBD.
Dr. Scherl established the first IBD tissue bank in New York City at Weill Medical College of Cornell University/New York- Presbyterian Hospital. She has extensive experience as an investigator in clinical trials and is currently participating in national multicenter trials and in investigator-initiated trials focusing on ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.
Marla C. Dubinsky, MD received a medical degree from Queen’s University in Canada and completed her clinical pediatric gastroenterology training at Sainte-Justine Hospital, University of Montreal in Quebec, Canada. Currently, Dr. Dubinsky is Director of the Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. In addition, Dr. Dubinsky is Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California, Los Angeles, David Geffen School of Medicine.
Board certified in pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology, Dr. Dubinsky holds positions of prominence with several advisory bodies, including Chair of the Western Regional Pediatric IBD Research Alliance. She is a member of several professional societies, including the American Gastroenterology Association, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Among her many awards, Dr. Dubinsky was a Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America Medical Honoree in 2004 and recently received the Lenny and Corinne Sands Clinical Investigator Award.
Dr. Dubinsky’s main research interests are health outcomes and the epidemiology and genetic influences of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in children. Her objective is to study the influence of genetics and immune responses on the variability in clinical presentations of early-onset IBD. Additional interests include the study of pharmacogenetics to evaluate how heredity influences drug responses and optimizing and individualizing the management of IBD. Dr. Dubinsky’s work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including Gastroenterology, The Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, and the American Journal of Gastroenterology. In addition, she has authored book chapters for Trends in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Therapy and Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Diagnosis and Therapeutics. Dr. Dubinsky has lectured widely both nationally and internationally.
